Good Thing Come To Those...

...who wait for homegrown tomatoes!
After fueling the soil with plenty of veggie and fruit table scraps, old mulch and worm-infested soil, we put our 'mater plants(4) in this pot just after Mother's Day, and they are lookin' great! The largest fruits are about 2" in diameter so far. Probably late July before the first harvest.

Running-wise, I've had some great weeks, but I have developed Runner's Knee over those weeks. The tendon above the knee cap gets swollen and stiff, and like all injuries, seems to drag on and on. I've also developed some left shoulder pain as well, which has reduced my swimming regimen. So...I'm just trying to ease back into the workout routine, but added more ice and ibuprofin into the mix.

Catch Me Run Fun

It was wet, cold and windy, but where else can you show up dressed in shorts and a dry-cleaning bag and not feel out of place? Lunken Airport for the annual Catch-Me run.
Rain was heavy for the early start, but tapered off once the race began. In fact, after the first mile, I shed my plastic bag and kept up a great pace throughout. Nice speed workout.

COLLLLD January Run

Ouch, it is cold today, but I managed to get my butt out the door and run an easy 5 in the snow. Headwind going out, but nice and warm on the way back.
Mileage these past few months has been meager due to the weather, but I'm cool with that. There's always the pool. :o)

Well, Merry Christmas to all my readers (2 on a good day?) and hope it was full of joy and happiness. The presents were mostly well-received, and we have now entered PCD...Post Christmas Depression, when the kids realize that this holiday is not going to last, and it's back to school in only 10 days. Of course, the parents feel the same way :o(. Fortunately, I am off next week.
Anyway, running is not going well, again. After Thanksgiving, my knees really started bothering me, so mileage is way down this month, but I am hitting the pool regularly, so my cardio isn't totally shot!

Training-wise, things are gong OK, though seems like as soon as I try and increase mileage, little, nagging injuries start to surface. Probably need a little more strength training.

First Day of School for Greta

Wednesday, August 25th. Finally...after a long, hot Summer, school is upon us, and it was dark outside! At 6:40, Maura and I walked Greta to the bus stop to delver her to the yellow monster...the school bus. Needless to say, we were all happy! Hanley started the following week on the 30th, though I think I slept in that day...sorry.

Anyway, Greta is a star player on the Nagel volleyball team and Hanley is working as a Manager with the Ursuline team, and my god, there is a lot of travel involved for poor Maura!

Anyway, running is going fairly well and we are all surviving.

Another Age-Group Placer

Yesterday morning I ran my second annual Newtown 5K and won a third place in the 45-49 age group with a 22:20 finish! WOOHOO! The sticky, hot weather made it uncomfortable for everyone, but we all toughed it out and were welcomed with good drinks and food afterwards.

Following the race, I went in for a contact lens fitting, which did not go well. The doc was creepy and the lenses are not the correct prescription. I put them on this morning hoping I could get used to them, but it ain't working! So, back I go for another try.

Anyway, off to the pool for a good swim!

Exhausted!

Well, I haven't done three workouts in one day since I was in my 20's, but today, I thought I'd go for a 20 mile bike, followed by a short run, just to see what it felt like. I dragged for about two miles then called it quits. Later, after cutting the grass, went to the pool for a refreshing swim, but still dragged. We had a late night last night...friends came over and stayed up too late, so I'm going to blame my draggyness on that!

The girls begin volleyball tryouts tomorrow, so everyone is a bit nervous. We find out on Wednesday if they both made their teams. Ack!

Anyway, it's 8:30 PM and I'm ready for bed.

Running Back on Track

On Sunday, I was fortunate to participate in the East Fork trail run with some of the other Echo Running Club folks. My race was a 5.6 mile loop through some beautiful trails, which certainly rival Mt. Airy as far as terrain goes. Being on the mend from a tendon injury, I opted for the single lap race vs. the 10.5 mile double.

Weather was hot and very humid for my 9:25 start time, but once I warmed up to the race, things felt pretty good though still a little testy in the ankle. The heat definitely took its toll on my speed, but I was happy just finishing with a respectable 49:50 without any discomfort.

Brian Nash, 3rd from left and the ECHO organizer, did the ten mile run after surgery in March to repair a faulty heart valve...good to have him back on the road. He's a great ambassador for the Cincinnati running community.

Feeling good the day after, I ran 3.5 the next day with no ankle issues....

I'm a happy boy!

Finally! Tomatoes are Ready

A home grown tomato is, without question, one of the best things on earth. On our deck, I have a large pot with three massive tomato plants, one of which is called "Early Girl." After two months of waiting and watering, we finally have some ripe ones coming with more on the way.

This fine fruit sacrificed itself for a couple of BLT sandwiches...toast, a little mayo and plenty of bacon.

We ate well tonight!

Swimming and some work in the office tomorrow, but I'm excited about my first trail race since my tendon injury.

Slow Recovery

Well, I'm back on my feet and running a little bit...3 miles here and there maybe three times a week. The ankle is still a little stiff and sometimes a bit sore, but manageable. Sitting in front of the computer at work for hours on end doesn't do much for the muscles, but I gotta make a living! Anyway, I signed up for a 5.5 trail race this Sunday at East Fork. It's a great event and I did pretty well last year, but I plan on taking it easy this time. I think I have enough strength to get through it OK. I've been hitting the pool and the bike a few time over the past 2 weeks, so my cardio is not totally whacked out.
We'll see what happens on Sunday.

Them Pike is Ripe for the Pickin'

OK, so on a normal day of fishing here in the UP of Michigan, catching a decent Northern Pike is something to brag about, but today we were invited to cast our lines off the Edward's dock on LaSalle island into a Pike hotbed. I caught the first one...maybe a 22-incher.

Rachel Sexton followed with an even larger one.

Hanley was next with another good sized fish,

then Greta, with the smallest of the group (unfortunately, here's wiggled off the hook before we could snap a photo).

The interesting thing about this is that they were all caught within the first 15 minutes!
Anyway, I was amazed. More to come...

2 Weeks...and I'm Grumpy

Ok, so it's been about 2 weeks since my last run, and while I'm more fortunate than others who have suffered a running injuries, it's still frustrating. My ankle is much better...little or no pain, but I miss the freedom of running terribly. Fortunately, I have been able to ramp up my swimming, so I haven't lost my cardio conditioning too much.
Anyway, I see the doc tomorrow afternoon for another assessment and hopefully get a green light to hit the road again.

I Got the Boot...

...and it sucks. I'm not sure how this all started. I went for a good run on Monday after work then for a good swim for following morning. Wednesday AM, I could barely walk. The Physician's Assistant says it may just be an inflamed tendon, but I see the doc tomorrow afternoon for more evaluation. Thank god it's not a stress fracture!

Wish me well...I'm hoping for a very short recovery.

Hanley had her last exam today, so both girls are out of school! Woo hoo!

Forest Hills 5K...I got an award!!

I have never won an award in my running career, until today! At the first annual Forest Hills 5K I cranked out a 6:58 pace to become the 3rd place winner in my age group with a PR finish of 21:18 and overall finish of 28th, and at 47 years old, I'll take it with a grin!

The event was terrific with a total turnout of over 2000; the expected number was supposed to be only around 800.

Knees Suck; But I Need Them!

Ok, so see how my wife is sitting? See how how my daughter Greta is sitting? Their knees are bent and they look so comfortable. The dogs don't care...but I cringe! My knees are killing me right now, perhaps it's because I pushed too hard at the pig? Didn't stretch enough? Right knee has bursitis (I think). Painful. Can't walk right...stairs suck, etc. I'm thinkin' it's time to visit the Doc.

So, what to do? I went for a good swim today, hacked out some honeysuckle from our yard, and iced the knee. I am hoping all is OK for next weeks Mt. Airy trail run. This is such a fun event, and to those that read this, be there! It's a one (5.3 mi), or two loop (10.5 mi) event that really goes deep into the heart of the Mt. Airy trails. It's also a great introduction to the Stone Steps 50K and 27K (New this year) held in October.

Getting old? I'm not ready for that yet.

Nuthin' Like 10,000+ Wet, Soggy Pigs!

The Sunday morning 6:00 am weather forecast was for a 100% chance of rain, and they were right. Ten hours after this photo was taken, this dry, pristine shirt and shoes were subjected to a heavy, drenching rainfall, thunder, and a few bolts of lightning thrown in for drama.

The 6:30 start was no different. Even though we were all trying to avoid puddles to keep our feet as dry as possible, it was futile, yet despite the rain, thousands of plastic bag-covered runners, the largest field ever, braved the elements and took off for the hills of Kentucky and Cincinnati for the 11th annual Flying Pig Marathon. Fortunately, the temperatures were in the upper 60's, so even though we were all soaked to the core, it wasn't that bad.

I felt great the entire 1/2 marathon distance and was hoping for a 1:30 finish, but the crowd was too large to really push my pace; of course the hills were also a major factor. But, once I tackled all of the hills at the 8 mile point, I felt strong enough to maintain 7-7:30 pace for the remaining 5 miles for a 1:46 finish.

Good race, not too cold, happy with the result!

Coopers Hawk - Our New Neighbor

We have a very impressive friend on our street this spring. This Coopers Hawk has found a nice home on the trees of our home stretch. The first time I saw him (her) he was feasting on a goldfinch carcass, and very contently, I may add. His preferred perch is across the street in a tall ash tree that delivers a great view of the area.

The Coopers Hawk feasts on birds and small rodents...Greta thinks this is a form of cannibalism, but it's just life. Welcome!

Dogwood's aBloomin'

We've had a devil of a time with our Dogwood trees over the years, but this Spring we had a nice set of blooms on our pink one. It's not a big tree, but sure is purty! My goal is to take the 4 yards of mulch we received today and make the rest of the yard a little purtier!

Went for a short 1000 yd swim this morning, but felt a little sluggish today; I think it was because it was so nice outside, and I was inside!

Dog Days of Spring

Courage, our faithful Chessie is a great dog. Friendly, affectionate... and old. This is a closeup of him laying in the yard today on a beautiful spring afternoon in Cincinnati, but look close and you can see how foggy his eyes are becoming. He gets around OK, but moves slowly. We're not really sure just how old he is, but the vet estimates around 10-11, so there's not much time left for this good ole dog. He's been a challenge at times, but we couldn't ask for a better companion.

Anyway, on to happier things: went for a mile swim yesterday and a nice 10 miler today, so I should be fine for the Flying Pig half. I think my days of long distance are winding down. I just keep getting injured on the really long runs. But, we'll worry about that later. I'm not ready to throw in the towel.

Easter Has Come...and Gone

Heart Mini Turns Out Great!

Well, I was not in this lead pack, but I sure felt strong the entire way!

I woke up Sunday morning and poked my head out the front door to check the weather. The forecast called for rain all day but it didn't happen. So, instead of heading back to bed, I dressed in my running gear and headed for the kitchen. I grabbed a power bar, a bottle of water and headed downtown for the 8am start. A light drizzle blanketed my car as I made my way along the river to Fountain Square...was there more rain to follow?

7:45...the rain was gone and all 3,500 of us made our way to the start. It was cool and breezy, but dry! 15 minutes went fast and we were off on our 15k (9.35mi) trek down Columbia Parkway.

Temperature was a perfect 45-50 degrees and I felt strong the entire way, but I held back at the beginning because I knew some long, gradual hills were in my future. It paid off in the end. I kept an average 7:30 pace the entire way for a 1:10 finish and was very pleased with the result, coming in 36th out of 202 in my age group and 350th overall; top 10%! Not bad for 47!

Finally Got a Real Suit!

Ok, so for all of the years I have been swimming (which has only been about 8), I have always used the traditional tourist-style suit. You know... long, baggy with that tacky Hawaiian print. Well, with reluctance, I finally "upgraded" to a real competition-style suit; partly for comfort, but also because I wanted to see if it would truly make a difference in performance.

WOW! After 8 years swimming in a sea anchor I am now free. Just a simple equipment change shaved a minute off my 500...without any extra effort. So, I can now swim longer, faster and easier and it only took 8 years to figure it out, or maybe I was just too bashful to put one on. In addition to a new suit, I read the book Total Immersion by Terry Laughlin. A real eye-opener. They also have a good website.

Anyway, the Heart Mini 15k is tomorrow and I'm still deciding if I want to trade a warm bed for wind, rain and cooler temps, but I have until 7:00 am tomorrow to make that decision :o]

Runnin' on the River

Spring is almost here, and with all of the rain we have had the Ohio River is on the rise in Cincinnati! We are at flood stage in the Queen City, so I thought it might be cool to take a camera with me on my 5 mile lunch-time jog across the Cincinnati bridges. As you can see, there ain't much room left on the banks. Anyway, I had a great afternoon trek and look forward to the rest of the weeks' mild weather.

Training-wise, I'm probably going to run the Heart Mini-marathon later this month, a deceptively difficult 9 miler along Columbia parkway. This should ease me into the Flying Pig Half in early May. My long distance runs have become just too damn painful to continue training for the full marathon. I'm cool with that.

Time for taxes...ack!

Snow, snow and more snow.

I really miss running downtown during lunch – which I have not been able to do for a week + because of this white crap, and with about 13" in most spots and cold temps, it's probably going to last a while. Fortunately, the track around Lunken Airport is cleared off, so I did run 5 miles there on Saturday, but it was very cold and windy. Then Sunday, I glided through a mile swim in the YMCA's over-heated pool. Boy, is that relaxing. I think I almost fell asleep in the water.
Meanwhile, the girls have had the last two day off, one for Pres. Day and the other for snow, but I think they're eager to get back to it.

Beautiful Snow Run

On Saturday morning, I headed down to the Newtown-Loveland bike trail to enjoy the fresh snow. I was the only one out there when I started, and it was great!
We had about 3-4" total, though nothing compared to the east, which is still digging out of 2+ feet. But, on my Saturday run, I wasn't concerned about that. It was too nice.

The cool thing was, after my eight mile run, I only saw 4 other people, and about eight dogs, oh, and I felt great!

Cold and Clumsy

Mt. Airy forest is a beautiful place to hit the trails in Cincinnati. There are long, uninterrupted stretches, gradual as well as intense climbs to keep us challenged, and many, many rocks and roots to test your knees, ankles and arches. I tripped over most of them on this cold and windy Saturday and left for home after 5 miles miles...sore. I haven't been on a trail in months, and my legs had joints had forgotten about what it can be like. Here are a couple photos of the trails. Some are easy while other sections are brutal like the infamous Stone Steps.

Ursuline Father Daughter Dance

What can I say? Hanley, her friends and I all had a great time. Dinner at the Montgomery Inn Boathouse followed by a very crowded dance at the Hyatt Regency downtown.

House Guests...Oh, and I can run again!

What a trio! This week, Courage (left) is hosing some friends, Penny and Real. All is well, except for some casual rolls in deer poop this afternoon. Penny (Center) found the best load of droppings and had to jump in the shower with Maura. I didn't ask what they talked about during their intimate moment, but I'm sure is was just casual conversation :o). Anyway, everyone is getting along just fine except for me! My allergies are not multi-dog friendly!
Good new on the knee front...all is well thanks to good advice from Sophie and the aleve and strength exercise advice. I managed a solid 4+ mile run today with very little discomfort. I just have to remain disciplined in my strength and stretching regimen.
In other news, the Ursuline Father-Daughter dance is tomorrow night. Hanley and I are heading to the Montgomery Inn Boathouse for dinner with 7 other dads and daughters, then off to the Hyatt Regency for the dance. I think we are both nervously excited! It's her first dance...

It's Getting Better!

You know, now that I think about it, Pateller Tendonitis is also called "Jumpers Knee." I've been doing a ton of swimming lately, and wonder if pushing of the wall too hard is causing this? Anyway, feels better today. As long as I keep moving, all is good. I did try (Stupidly) to run today, but after one stride I had to call it quits. I'll wait...

Crap-WIll I Ever Recover?

Ok, so I went running last week, and have not run since...seems I have Pateller Tendonitis or bursitis. It is extremely painful to go down hills, ride a bike, walk, and whatever else I do. This sucks since Flying Pig training should be well under way. I have no idea what caused this, but it came on suddenly with a bang. I did run in the snow, which may have screwed up my stride, but did I mention this sucks?
This could take several weeks to fully heal from what I've read...:o(

Sheesh! Post Something!

Well, the New Year is here, Christmas is past, and I am finally posting something, for God's sake! We all had a wonderful Christmas with Maura's family on the eve of, then off to my parents for Christmas dinner. I was a great time at both occasions, though I have to admit, I'm glad to be back at work at DeanHouston doing a lot of multimedia and 3D design...love it!
I recently entered a logo design contest for my sister-in-law's running club, VHTRC, and just found out that my submission was the winner! That is so cool and can't wait till they start using the design.
My hope this year is to train through the winter and run in the Flying Pig Marathon this May, then, maybe, head to West Virginia and run with the VHTRC group at the Highlands Sky 40 miler in June (with a new VHTRC t-shirt). We'll see how it goes. Cincinnati weather has been bitter cold the last week+, so training has been a bit slow.

Happy Thanksgiving

On Thursday, Maura and I did the 100th anniversary Thanksgiving Day race in downtown Cincinnati. Maura walked the 10k course while I ran. The weather was perfect for running...a little chilly, but all good. I had a great time of 47:17, just over 7:30 per mile and Maura finished just about an hour later. Great day!

T'was a foggy morning in Cincinnati today. I snapped this on the way to work down at Lunken Airport. This shot overlooks the golf course. High temp was about 65 and perfect weather fora lunchtime 4-miler. Legs are getting stronger and confidence is high for a good running season.
The StoneSteps 50k is on Sunday, but count me out unless I'm feeling strong enough to do a portion ofthe run.

We've had a really rainy couple of days, but it stopped for a little while this afternoon. The sun was trying to break through over this tower in Over the Rhine, but no success.
No running for me today...had a double workout yesterday with a swim in the AM and an afternoon 5-miler.

Cooler Weather is Here

Temperatures are finally settling to the mid to upper 60s, which has been great for running. I always thought I was a warm-weather runner, but these temps are perfect! And although I still get sore, the IT band and right knee pains are not as chronic as they were last month...thank god! Runs have been slow and steady and I try to walk down the steep hills to reduce the stress.

FItness & Volyball Updates

Still undefeated, Ursuline freshman continue to dominate the Cincinnati volleyball courts. Hanley, number 8, is doing well so far, usually starting as the Right Hitter. This is a very competitive program, so she is going to have to stay focused and give it 100% every time.

Greta's team also continued undefeated. She plays the entire rotation and has a very good serve. Her future looks very encouraging! I don't have their team photo yet, but will post when I get it.

Meanwhile, my running is getting off to a slow start. I think I started too early after my knee injury (while tiling the bathroom. Huh?). I took about 2 weeks off, focusing on swimming and some cycling, but went for a run today and the pain resurfaced after about 2 easy miles. It's probably time to see the Orthopedic doc to get some diagnosis and PT.

Volleyball Update

A new Lifestyle...Ack!

Well, the girls have started their season off with a bang! Ursuline played Saturday and beat Lakota East in a close match-up, then turned right around and pulverized Turpin (My alma mater) 2 games to zip. Greta's team, the Nagel Nighthawks stepped up and beat Norwood easily in two games.
No photos from Greta's game, but she played an awesome first match, and ultimately won the game ball!! Way to go.

On the running front, I've been struggling with some IT and knee issues the past few weeks, which has been really frustrating! So, I'm taking it easy, icing and stretching, and focusing on swimming, weight lifting and cycling until I'm back on the trail. It sucks...big time! Running is such a stress reliever and I miss the miles.

East Fork Trail Run

Last weekend was the final race of the Dances With Dirt Trail series. This race was different in that it started the slowest from the series starting first, with the faster runners starting later in hopes that we would all finish close to the same time. As it turned out, the elite runners caught up with everyone at about the 4 mile mark in the 5 mile race and passed us all like a herd of spooked deer. And while it was impressive to watch these fast CC runners explode through the trails, I think it left all the slower runners little bit stunned by their approach.
Anyway, I was able to rally at the end for a happy 44:15 finish and a great after-race brunch catered by Heather Poast. It was a great time!

Fench Park Trail Run

The French park trail run, 3.1 miles, was tough. The race began with a 1/4 mile sprint downhill through mowed grass and mole hills before entering the woods. The strategy in this run was to be conservative early on, then kick into gear the last mile or so. Needless to say, the initial downhill got me a little excited and I pushed too hard early on. I paid the price, as the last 1/2 mile was uphill. Ouch, I didn't see that coming! Anyway, I finished in 28:25 on a warm, muggy morning, though I have to admit, the trails were awesome.
The IT band takes a hit from these event, but if I keep on the roller, it helps!
The last event in this series is in July 19th for a 5.6 mile race through some cool East Fork Lake trails, followed by a brunch. Going to be a great time...the trails are addicting.

Mt. Airy Forest was host to my second trail race in a four-race series, and it was a great one at that! Despite feeling awful in the morning from allergies, I forced myself to load up the car and head on out for the 9 AM start.

The weather was crisp and clear, perfect for a 10.1 mile, 2-loop run, and after a minute or two in the woods, I was feeling strong and remained that way for the 1:34 duration. The trails were in great shape with only a couple of sloppy spots from rains earlier in the week. The first loop got a little crowded, but it forced me to run conservatively early on, and once the groups thinned out on loop two, I felt strong enough to cut loose. I was running in my old Montrail Hurricane Ridge shoes which felt a little heavy, but the traction was very good; no major slips or spills!

Next race is a short one at French Park, but there are creeks involved!

Flying Pig Update

Well, it's Flying Pig time and unfortunately, I am not going to be participating this year. Sore IT band, a basic lack of training, and a hefty $70 late entrance fee have me a bit concerned about running this year. I may go down and cheer on the runners, but the weather is supposed to be rainy and cool. Good for them, but not so good for spectators. I'm OK with that, though. I have a trail race scheduled for the 16th, part of a 4-race trail running series I signed up for, so I'm going to focus on hill training and some speed work. I have to admit, the Pig is difficult to prepare for, as most of the training is January-March...and I'm not much of a cold weather kind of guy!

Lost Another Friend

Maura's mother left us on Sunday morning, April 19th after her battle with pancreatic cancer. The Sunday before, she spent Easter with most of the family at their home in Blue Ash, but the following week was the turning point. She died peacefully at the Hospice just up the street from her home.
She was also one of the very few readers of this blog...we will miss her terribly!

Many years ago, in 1980, I attended Wittenberg University for a year. During that brief time , I made a few good friends that I recently reconnected with via Facebook. My old friend John found this god-awful photo from our freshman year.
Yes, that is me with fellow guitar player, now famous chef, Adam Votaw.
The guitar I am playing was given to me by my brother, Rusty...who is now a well respected musician in Charlottesville, VA.
I think the glasses and hair speak for themselves.

Help for the IT!

(No, that is NOT me!) Relief has arrived, and it comes in the form of a simple, solid foam roll! Maura surprised me with one of these devices for our anniversary last week and it REALLY works. After trying to manage tight a IT band for months, just a few minutes of concentrated rolling across the outside of the leg not only eased the tightness, but also helped to relieve pain in my hips. It does hurt a little bit in the beginning, but the more I do it, the better it feels.
And the benefit...my mileage is finally on the rise in preparation for the Flying Pig in early May. Keeping the fingers crossed for this one. If I can stay health, my goal is to break 3:45.

More news: At the suggestion of a friend, I searched Ebay and found a really cool vintage Bear Bow from the early 1960s. I grew up shooting the Bear brand bow, so it's going to be cool to get this one up and running. I have a new string, just need to get some arrows and other gear, then we are in business! The only real problem is the draw weight...50lbs of pull to achieve a full draw. I tried it last night and it's going to be quite an achievement to get used to shooting this monster.

I Am So Done with Snow

OK...snow is fun and all, but not when it hangs around for weeks!! Well, finally this mess is starting to melt. Today is going to be in the upper 50's. So now, instead of snow, we have all these puddles of dirty slush. But that is ok by me.

Wow, it has been a long time since my last post! Over the holidays, we had Mike, Merri Lynn, Kathleen and Paul in town for T-day. We all had a great time! This photo was taken at the Cincinnati Zoo on a beautiful, crisp fall day. Paul slept through the entire event, but the girls had a great time checking out all the cool animals. As usual, we headed over to Wyoming, OH for a Cordes dinner that couldn't be beat. Friday took us to the Boathouse for a great Rib dinner, then on Saturday, we headed over to Grandma's house for even more food. Ack!
Mom and Dad have a new addition to the family! About a month ago, after Foggy's passing, the parents decised to get a DOG!!! Worried at first, I am happy to say that they have really stepped up and have done a great job with their new family member, Real...the Springer Spaniel. He's extremely friendly and very cute! He has been going through rigorous training and is quite the charmer. We are looking forward to taking care of him while Mom and Dad are in Texas over the Christmas holidays.

Halloween Fun - The Joker, Batman, Mario & Luigi

When you mix the weekend, great weather, and terrific costumes together, you can't help but have an awesome Halloween.

Greta(Joker) and neighbor Frankie (Batman) along with Hanley (Luigi) and friend Sophia (Mario) are showing off their costumes. Trick or Treat started at 6:00pm and went till 8. When all was said and done, we ended up with about 30 pounds of candy and two worn out tooth brushes!

Training -wise, I am finally recovering after my 50k held on the 19th of October. I was really tired up until the last week and have been able to get in some good 6 milers this week with just a little IT band pain. I am going to go easy for another week and then start to ramp it up. One thing I would like to do is incorporate more speed-work and hill training to build some much needed strength in these areas...if I can remain injury-free, that is!!

Stone Steps...DONE DEAL!!

Everything started out just great this morning. With about 67 runners participating, the race started promptly at 8:00 am, temperature in the mid 40s. Throughout the event, it rose to about 65 and the sun was out the entire time.

The course was beautiful and I felt I had prepared fairly well for the event, though as mentioned in previous posts, I was a bit concerned about IT band and hamstring issues. Everything seemed to be working fine until about mile 23, just as I was beginning the final two loops, a 3.5 miler and the final 5.3 miler. I was very sluggish going into the smaller loop and found myself walking more than running. I was also running alone, which is usually not good for me. Fortunately, someone caught ups to me and gave me some encouraging words. I managed to work my way to the check point and prepped myself to head out one last time for the final 5.3 miles. I downed some PB&J sandwiches and a GU and started out.

About 1 mile later (27), I bonked...everything hurt. My toes, IT and hamstring started to really ache. I fell into a brisk walk to try and recover, but with every descent, my toes screamed, "stop!" I kept catching roots with my shoes, further intensifying the pain. The constant barrage of stones and roots on the trail also caused extreme discomfort as it forced me to shift my footing constantly. Mile 28...3 more to go. I pushed on at a steady gait. My goal was 6:30, and I was 5:50 hours into it.

Still alone, I walked for the next mile or so and reached the fourth and final ascent of the stone steps. This felt pretty good as it helped to stretch everything out a little bit and I was able to run on a smooth part of the trail for about half a mile. I was getting so close, but the pain resurfaced and forced me to walk again for the next 1.5 miles or so. 6:15 and still another 1.75 mils to go with another steep descent and nasty climb before the finish. At 6:35, I reached the 30.5 mile mark and knew it was going to be OK. Thank god for a small group of runners coming up behind me. This boosted my adrenaline just enough to scramble to the finish with the family waiting.

Sophie, thanks for the encouragement. I met a guy there with a VHTRC shirt on! I think his name was Bill Lohse (?).

Ouch, I hurt, but I did it! 6:42 hours later I have completed my first ultra! Unfortunately no photos, but plenty of memories. It's going to be a sore morning!

Stone Steps Training Update

I have been icing/stretching/resting a lot (maybe too much - only about 8 miles this week) and taking my ibuprophen regularly, so I'm hoping come Sunday, things will fall into place. I'm just going to go out slow and hang on for 31 miles. But if things start to tighten up too much, I have no problem with calling it quits.
Weather is going to be sunny and cool in the morning (low 40's) with a high of about 65. I'm hoping for some fog...that would be cool to run through! I'll have photos and a race update next week!

Stone Steps...this Sunday

Aaaaagh...I have just sent in my registration. I am hoping that I have trained enough, despite the sore left leg issues. The course shown at left (click to enlarge), is a series of loops: 4 large loops (5.3 miles) and three small loops (about 3.5 miles). The weather is supposed to be great...cool in the AM and warming up to the 70s by noon.
I have been trying to follow Sophie's fueling, stretching and icing advice for the past week, but I'm still sore. I am hoping the adrenaline and other runners will smooth things out and make for a great adventure in downtown Cincinnati!

StoneSteps 50K Training Update

Given that Mt. Airy Forest in right next door to downtown Cincinnati, it is a beautiful park and a surprisingly great place for an ultra-marathon...the Stone Steps 50K. I went for a long training run on Saturday, about 16 miles, and the trails are totally clear of debris from Hurricane Ike. Unfortunately, my hamstring and IT issues have resurfaced. I am stretching like crazy and hoping that plenty of rest and rehab will make the Stone Steps a reality. With just under 2 weeks to go, I am going to wait until race day to register. So for now, I'm going one day at a time. This afternoon, I struggled through about 1.5 miles with discomfort.
Frustrating indeed.

The Speidel Reunion

It's a rare opportunity when the Speidel brothers get together. This weekend, we had that opportunity, though bitter sweet. It was my Uncle Dick's memorial service. Yet, despite the sad circumstances, it was great to get everyone together to share stories, photos and laughter.

We had a great collection of Speidel family including Scott, Kathy, Conner and Nancy, RaeAnn and Reeve, Liz, Erin and Kate, Champe and Lisa, Russ and Walter, Whitney, Uncle Jack and Nancy, and Rusty and Sophie.

Anyway, the plan is to get together again under more positive circumstances...
Let's do it!

How's My Training Going?

Well, I'll tell you...
I have had a few good weekends, putting in a 14 and 12 miler in over the previous two weeks. But I have a nagging pain that just doesn't seem to get better. It's right at the top of my femur...a sharp pain that kind of wraps around my butt! After about 10 miles, my legs start to go almost numb and I just shut down and start walking. Sciatic nerve, perhaps? This has put a major cramp in my training for the Stone Steps 50K. My hope was to do a 17-20 miler today, but soreness and heat pretty much screwed that up; I managed 7 miles; and with the race in mid October, I may have missed my window for getting in a quality long run before the taper.
Speaking of Stone Steps, turns out Hurricane Ike, which paid us a visit last Sunday, really tore up the course. According to one runner who checked it out, the trail is littered with fallen trees and limbs. I guess it is up to the Cincinnati Park Board to take care of this.
Anyway, I will push on and probably still give it a go. I always seem to find added stamina when I'm running with others.

Lost Yet Another Friend...and Uncle

These "Lost Another Friend" posts are getting old and I don't like them. But, unfortunately I regret to say that my Uncle Dick passed away this morning around 7:00am from complications from cancer. He had been fighting this awful disease for quite a while and it finally got the best of him while vacationing in Cedarville, MI.

Surrounded by son, daughter and friends, he passed peacefully in his beloved vacation home on LaSalle in the Les Cheneaux islands. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ironically, this photo was taken at the memorial gathering for his wife Liz, who also passed away from cancer. But finally, they are together once again, enjoying peace and love in heaven.

It's not fair, and while I dread these posts, but I don't want to forget the people that have touched my life.

Group Training Run-SS50K

Hi all,
Went on a nice training run at Mt. Airy forest this morning with a great group of Ultra-Runners. The pace was slow and steady and I heard some great stories from some ultra veterans. Everything went well until my shoe "broke" as I pulled the laces tight. The piece of plastic that tightened the shoe around my ankles snapped off, so I felt a little wobbly during the run. I got in about 3 hours(12 miles) of running before things started to get painful. The shoe in question: Montrail Hurricane Ridge. I had read some reviews about this shoe and found that this flaw has happened to others. To be honest, this broken piece rendered the shoe useless! Ouch!
Anyway, things are on track for the SS50K in mid October.

Foggy Update

Well, thing are not looking as good as we had hoped for Foggy...she is again missing as of Wednesday night. Last time we saw her she was laying in the flower bed, but looking very skinny, weak and dehydrated. I brought her inside, put her on her bed and assumed that I would be back in the morning to bury her. Next morning (Wednesday) she was gone, and I mean not in her bed!

Visions of "Pet Cemetery" entered my brain as I searched the house, expecting Foggy to creep up from the basement with sunken eyes and a low, eerie meow. I looked all over the house...nothing. I noticed that I had forgotten to close the back screen door. My hope is that she found a safe place to lie down and pass on, again.

Found a Friend!!!

Foggy has been found! I still can't believe it, but we got word this morning that a dark brown calico cat had been found in the neighborhood. Just two doors down from my parents place, Foggy wandered into their back yard. Assuming she was lost and in poor health, they took her in, went to the vet and got her checked out. Turns out, she is in good health, but has a hyper-active thyroid. So...with proper medication and plenty of food, she should be fine. Who knew?

Lost Another Friend - Foggy the Cat

For 2 months I have been taking care of my parent's cat, Foggy, a very frail (20+ years old) calico. Well, for the past few days I have not seen her anywhere - not in the house - not outside. Last time I saw her she looked really tired and very "old." My fear is she has wandered off to put herself to rest. I have searched the entire house in hope of finding her sleeping in some remote corner, but no luck. I talked to a few cat people and both have assured me that cats do have a sense when their time is near and tend to find a safe, quiet spot to go...though I am still keeping an eye out just in case. Anyway, we miss her and glad she had a great life.

Newtown 5K

Finally...after all my years living in Anderson Township, I ran the Newtown 5K. What the hell took so long? I have no idea. But this morning was a beautiful day and I woke up inspired. And with little time to spare, I threw on my running gear, grabbed a $20 from the petty cash jar and high-tailed it down the street to register, and I am so glad I did.

My race report: Fast course. After registering, I had about 30 minutes to warm up among the 600+ other participants. Walking around the starting area, I started to feel really old, as I realized most of the participants were middle and high-school cross-country runners putting in some needed speed work for the up-coming season. I was fine with that..
.
I felt pretty good gearing up for the start. After the gun, we made our way. Less than 7 minutes later, I heard the 1 mile volunteer blurt out, "6:50."
Now, I usually don't take off this fast, but this was great. "Was that the FIRST mile?" I asked the old man running next to me.

OK, so the first mile is basically down hill, but it was great inspiration to keep it going strong. I finished just a tad over 22 minutes and was very pleased with the results...8min/mile is my usual standard!

Ultra Wannabes-Visit Mt. Airy Forest

I admire ultrarunners. The stories I read always involve high levels of comraderie, cool equipment, intense situations, and an awesome post-race social atmosphere. In my running career, I have run 5 marathons, 3 halfs and numerous 5 and 10 k's, yet I have never taken on the challenge of an ultra.

Reason? I believe it's partly due to geography. Trail running in my part of the world did not blossom until recently, and those who had an interest had to travel to another zip code to experience a great trail. Eventually, Cincinnati runners discovered local parks that could provide a decent trail running experience, Mt Airy Forest and East Fork Lake are two good examples.

Over the last few weekends, I have made the 30 minute commute to Mt. Airy for some nice 10 mile trail runs and have really enjoyed the adventure of cruising along the single-track route, dodging root and rock, trying not to sheer an ankle or take a tumble. The experience is serene, quiet and tough! The goal: The Stone Steps 50K in October.

The race is several loops through the rolling park trails, with one major climb per loop up a huge and steep hill of stone steps. It is not pretty! But...it is a nice view once you reach the top.
Anyway, if all goes well over the next few months, I will take the plunge and give the Stone Steps a try. Wish me luck, because I know if I complete one of these things, I'll be itching for another.

Michigan is Dog Country!

Summer vacation was a little touch and go for me this year as I spent the first few days horizontal with a sinus infection; but it eventually passed. Courage was finally able to make his first trip to the UP. He had a great time playing in the water and just hanging out. He's getting on in years, so he moved kind of slow, but none-the-less, we were glad he joined us. This photo shows Maura and Courage at a beach east of Cedarville towards DeTour. The water was a balmy 60+ degrees. OUCH!

Ouch! My IT Band hurts!

I've been doing some easy runs, but after about three miles, it tends to flare back up. It's a frustrating process but it will get better.

Lost Another Friend

I got to know Matt Schaefer when I started dating Maura. He was her next-door neighbor. When I was browsing through the photos posted on his Caring Bridge site, I came across this one and immediately recognized the hair as the classic Matt look. That is how I remember him best, and will continue to remember him. Wonderful guy...

Matt passed away, peacefully with family at his side, on Tuesday evening (yesterday) from cancer.

It's a rare treat when the VA Speidels visit us in Cincinnati. We took total advantage of their presence this Memorial Day weekend when we headed down to Coney Island t take in a few rides. Here are the three cousins ready to roll! We spent a few hours takin in the rides and eating some fine food...the Montgomery Inn Combo meal was a big hit...NOT! Poor Rusty had some issues with one of the rides, but we all survived, puke-free!

My First Official Trail Race!

The shoes say it all! Well, it wasn't an ultra, but I went on my first trail race on Sunday, and I have to admit, that was the most invigorating run I have been on in quite some time. T-Shirt courtesy of my bro and sis-in-law.
The race was a short 5.5 miler through the beautiful and rugged trails of Mt. Airy forest on the west side of Cincinnati. What I really enjoyed was the focus I had to maintain throughout the run. It kept my mind off the distance and time, and more on the technical aspects, such as the roots and rocks. And that was good, since I spent the previous night at a graduation pary for my friends daughter. Too much "carbo loading," if you know what I mean.
I felt totally in the element, and that was a great feeling. This race was part of a trail run series put on by our local running store, Ronckers Running Spot.
The trail was mostly single-track, which made it difficult to pass others, so time-wise, I had to maintain an 8:50 pace or so. The winner completed in just over 6:00/mile! Egad!

Penny (left), our very friendly neighborhood lab is staying with us for a few weeks while her parents are in Spain. Not only is she as sweet as she looks, but Courage has taken a liking to her! After an initial scuffle, Courage established his role as the dominant alpha, and the rest just fell into place. During the day while we are at work and school, the two remain in the house, and so far, no major accidents.
We'll miss her when she has to leave!

The Flying Pig - DONE DEAL!!

Well, 4 hours and 20minutes later, with several blisters in "toe", I have ended the day with another Flying Pig under my belt. It's been 9 years since I last ran a marathon, and I totally forgot how painful they can be, but all-in-all, it was a great experience.
Last night, I was dreadfully nervous. After an anxious night at my brother-in-laws for dinner, I had an equally nervous night's sleep, if that's what one would call it. Maura and I woke at 4:30 this morning to begin our adventure. She was walking the half and I had opted into the full marathon. The crowd was huge...11,000+ runners and walkers graced the starting line. At 6:45, the race was on.
The course winds through northern Kentucky and re-enters Cincinnati to begin a long, steep climb, reaching the top at around mile 9. The half marathoners take a left and head home, while the full marathoners begin their journey by heading right and through Hyde Park, Mariemont, and back downtown. I was feeling good and running comfortably, but in the back of my mind, I kept remembering that my training leading up to this point had not been optimal. With 17 miles to go, there were doubts that I would finish this thing.
Thank god for the crowds! They managed to pull me through some tough areas. Miles 23-26 are on a relatively flat, unpopulated area, and with full sun and rising temperatures, my feet were blistered and very sore. I had to walk several times during this leg, but once we reached the downtown area, I was able to "sprint" to the finish.

Some Wacky Runner Observations

As I prep for the pig, there have been some funny things that I have noticed about my habits that I am sure many others have experienced:
1. Tops of Gel packets are littered about my house and car
2. The smell of sweaty running clothes doesn't bother me as much.
3. If my water bottle doesn't have a colored fluid in it, something isn't right.
4. Socks have taken on a new importance in my daily routine.
5. If I forget to wear my running watch, it's a bad day.
6. Polyester has become a favorite fabric...ouch!
7. I know what NUUN is!
8. I find myself stretching all the time.
9. Searching for running videos on YouTube has become a habit.

THREE DAYS TILL PIGGY

Egad...am I ready? I don't believe I put in enough miles on the road to kick butt, but hopefully enough to squeeze through with a respectable time. I went for a short run yesterday, and was all achy, so I hope that is not a predictor of things to come.Weather is looking great, however!

Spring is in the Air!

Alas, after many years of no blooms, the pink dogwood has managed to produce. This tree is 1 of 3 that managed to survive. The white one just to the left of this is just about ready to explode with blossoms. Photo to follow!
And speaking of pink, I think I am ready for the Flying Pig Marathon next weekend. I failed my sister-in-law, Sophie's advice to get in another 20 miler, but I did manage 13 last week. With the crowds and other runners as motivation, I am hoping for a decent race. The 13 miler was not without pain, however. My feet were pretty sore following that run. I picked up some new Asics road shoes yesterday, and that is going to help!
If all goes well on May 4, then perhaps the Highlands Sky ultra in early June will be my first! Later!

The GA 5K

Hanley, Abby( Hanley's buddy) and I had a thrilling time at the Guardian Angels School first 5k race. The weather was cool and windy, but despite that, the girls came in under 29 minutes and I rallied at the end for a 22:05. The girls were clearly tired afterwards...may have been due to the previous night's sleepover, but it was great to introduce the girls to an organized running event. Schweet!

The Flying Pig is near...

I've paid my money...now I have to perform. Ack! I went for a 17 miler today, with the intention of doing a 20 miler. My mind said 20 but there were two appendages that said, "no way!" at 17. In spite of the missing three miles, I feel confident that I'll be able to work through the 26.2 without too much discomfort. I am now beginning the tapering process and am looking forward to a good race; I would love to come in under 4 hours.
Maura is also participating in this year's event. She will be walking the half-marathon, with her friend Mei Mei, for the first time.

Training Blahs–yuch!

Ever have one of those training runs where nothing is in synch? Well, today was one of those days. We had beautiful weather today, high of about 60, full of sunshine. So why not go for a nice trail run? So I did. I made my way to Withrow Nature Preserve, a nice 1.8 mile loop through field and forest, but unfortunately, the cards were not in my favor. I started out OK, but less than a mile into a planned 8 miler, my lunch decided to pay me another visit. 8 miles turned into a mere 3. OUCH! Anyway, with tired legs and a bloated belly, I chalked it up as one of those days where nothing was working for me. Diet? Not enough rest? I don't know for sure, but I am hoping for better training tomorrow.

The ECHO Running Club is a nice group of folks who really show a passion for the sport, and today I was glad to be part of this morning's Catch Me run at Lunken Playfield. The concept was simple: Have a staggered start based on one's anticipated finish time. Slower runner start first, fast follow, so at the end, we all finish at the same time. The photos show the group at the finish and as they wander back to their cars amid the eerie fog. Thanks to Doug Maxwell for organizing this event!

Update from the Speidels...this last weekend, we experienced the largest storm in 10 years, and it came in the form of many inches of snow. Just when we thought the winter was behind us, 10+ inches of white stuff came hammering down on us. It started on Friday night and kept on coming through Saturday. And while it stalled the roads for a bit, the dogs, including our house guest, Auggie, had a great time. Warm weather is predicted for next week and I will finally be able to get in a long training run (15 miles) in preparation for the Flying Pig the first week of May.

Training for the Flying Pig Marathon always gets difficult this time of year due to the cold, snowy weather; motivation is hard to come by these days. But, I have started to work more long runs into my training schedule and am feeling strong and relatively pain-free. With just over 2-months to go, I am on track for a good race, and while I would love to incorporate more trail runs into the routine, it's been so muddy around here, the running is hazardous...don't want to risk some freak accident if I can help it.
Maura and her buddy, Mei Mei are planning to walk the half.

Chess Legend Dies

Chess legend, Bobby Fischer, died at his home in Iceland today. He was 64. He turned out to be quite an ass later in life...giving up his US citizenship, moving to Iceland, becoming a recluse. I hope he passed surrounded with some friends or family.
Ok...so that's two icons from my past in just over a week. Oh, and Dan Fogelberg died a few weeks ago as well! Wassup!
But there's still Stephen King, Steve Jobs, CSN&Y, Sir David Attenborough, Garrison Keillor, and many other. I'm good...

What can I say...he was "The Man" in mountain climbing circles. Sir Edmund Hillary passed away the other day from a heart attack, of all things. Click here for his video-obituary.
I'll always remember a book I read as a boy of about 12 years old called "On Top of the World," the story of his ascent with Tenzing Norgay. I must have read it 100 times. Anyway, it's a great loss to the adventurers of the world.

A Dog of a Day

There are not many dogs on the planet that really tolerate this kind of stuff...but Courage is one of them. Snuggled in his bed, Courage welcomed Greeta to hang out and relax. I'm not sure if Greeta was really asleep, but it would have been easy to do so!
Courage...a great family dog indeed!

Well, it's a new year and all is well. I finally got my first pair of real trail-runing shoes and look forward to putting them to the test this year. If I can remain injury-free, my first big race will be the Flying Pig marathon in May. I am also looking at my first ultra (50K) in October. We will see how it goes.
The family is good, but it's back to school and work tomorrow...yuck!

Christmas has come and gone in the Speidel house. All had a great day. The girls got tons of clothes and a few movies as well as a cool Wii game...Mario Galaxy. We all love it.

Well, another successful Thanksgiving in 07. We were so happy to have the Virginia Speidels with us this weekend. Rusty, Sophie, Chapin, Carter and Virginia are the best. Everyone got along great and we did manage to stuff ourselves at Aunt Genie's house. TTFN

Fall is almost over in Cincinnati and the leaves are almost off the trees. This is Courage showing his best side, and even though this was taken in the summer, it seems appropriate, as days are getting shorter and nature is winding down for a long winter nap. Lick on, Courage!

First Day of School

Well, the first day of school was yesterday. WOOHOO! Per tradition, this is our classic “Walk to the bus stop” photo. Smaller crowd this year, as Hanley was already in class when this photo was taken. She's on the bus by 6:50 AM. Ouch!
Anyway, the girls and Courage had a though-provoking stroll to their final destination...Mercer Elementary. Have fun!

Lost a Friend

We got some sad news on Sunday that our dear friend and former neighbor, Lori Dierckes, passed away. Mark tells us she is finally at peace after fighting breast cancer for several years.
Lori and Mark became our very close friends after moving next door to us on Asbury Rd. They were the kind of neighbors you could always count on to help out, or just hang out with, and it was obvious they were true soul-mates.
Lori will be missed by everyone she made contact with.

Hi all. we returned from vacation in the UP of Michigan the othe day. My oh my what beautiful weather we had! We left on June 22 and stopped in Flint for the night. From there we headed to Grayling to stay with our friends the Muzzo's for a day. Great time indeed. We left early on my birthday, the 24th, and ended up at our cottage just in time for lunch. On a visit to a nearby beach, we saw the local birdlife hover overhead, hoping to partake in some of our lunch.

Ahhh yes. Once again, another sucessful semester!
Speech was, of course, the most challenging to get through but check out that "A"!!!! Archaeology was easy but I did not put forth the total effort to get that A. The coop was a simple pass or fail.
Anyway, I'm proud of what was accomplished this spring semester.
This fall I'm taking a requirement in Geology and a 300 level of which I'm not totally decided on yet.

Flying Pig race

Maura and I did the flying pig this weekend. She did the 10K on Saturday and I did the 1/2 on Sunday. Perfect weather for both. It was an awesome weekend!
